If you did Vieques, how did you get there (ferry or air) and would you recommend it? I would prefer the ferry for cost reasons, but I hear you can spend hours waiting and don't want to waste half a day. Interested in real life experiences!
If you flew there, did you book roundtrip flights from mainland to SJU, then separate round trips from SJU to Vieques? Not sure of how best to book. |
We just added it on to the flight to SJU. Was more expensive but also easiest. |
We flew out of Isla Grande, which is a separate airport in San Juan, on Vieques Air Link. We arrived into SJU around noon, went into Old San Juan, got lunch, walked around, saw the fort, then took a 10 minute cab ride to Isla Grande for the flight at 4:30. The flights out of Isla Grande are MUCH cheaper than out of SJU. The downside is that if your flight into SJU gets delayed you could have a problem rebooking the second flight because they are separate tickets, so I would allow a buffer between the flights. |
I went to Vieques last year. Booked flight all way there had few hour layover in Dan Juan airport but then travel day got us to tiny island.
When we left Vieques I booked sep flight to Isla Grabde airport another poster talked about - that way we were close to beach hotel. Have to tell you planes to island are tiny. One flight was just 1 passenger plus my DD and I But she lives Vieques and the bio - luminescent bay was amazing. You have to do it if you go to island! |
We did the ferry. The bio bay was good but frankly, not worth the trip. |
Did ferry to Vieques - lots of waiting and DH got sea sick.
Took puddle plane back - much easier, worth the extra expense. For the bio bay, reserve the clear bottom kayaks, so cool. |
Also did ferry - you cannot beat the price. But yes there was a wait. Not a half day but it was an hour or two. |
