I know we are late to the game, but we have pivoted from a bigger international trip to a shorter driving trip for mid-August with our two teens. We're looking for something that has a more rural feel (though like small charming towns too), with some activities like hiking and whitewater rafting. Would appreciate good food. My kids do not want a beach vacation, but could be lakefront or just enjoy nice scenery of some kind. The most difficult requirement is that we're really trying to keep it to a 3-4 hour drive from the Philly area.
We have considered the Poconos, which is an obvious choice, but I'm having trouble getting excited about. I welcome any other suggestions, including places to stay! |
New River Gorge. |
Great Smoky Mountains. |
This would be good for real white water rafting but you could also river float and hike at Harpers Ferry. |

Agree that new river gorge isn’t 3-4 hours, but it has everything you want. Rafting, hiking, lakes, zip lines, and Fayetteville is a cute little town with some fun restaurants.
My other recommendation was going to be Conway, NH. Tubing, hiking, adorable downtown. Both are closer to 7 hours though. |
What about the Finger Lakes region? Around 4.5 hrs away. |
Western Maryland or Poconos. |
Ohiopyle is great and will be within 4 hour drive from Philadelphia. |
We went on ATVs after a big storm in the Poconos. We were covered head to toe, literally, in muddy water. It was fun, and my teens loved it, especially my DS teen who went a bit insane on the ATV keeping up with his petrol-head crazed father. We walked into the hotel looking grubby, and everyone was staring. LOL. It was like that commercial. |

We are doing a driving trip to Niagara for a couple of days and then the Finger Lakes. |
