For those with kids going into senior year of college interning this summer, are they hoping for a return offer?
|
Sure |
Yes, kid has been told most interns get offers, and they’re hoping to continue remote PT during the school year. Big national company. |
Yes, that would be ideal. 🙂 |
Big 4 DC is banking on one |
Yes because he is really happy there. He has been super impressed with the company. But he has a sticky situation. He already has a post graduation internship lined up for next summer which he doesn’t want to back out on because it’s an amazing opportunity. I’m not sure this company will wait on him to complete next summer’s internship. |
Might not apply this year, but in a normal year the government labs (e.g., ARL in Adelphi) with internships for college students will offer to keep their well performing college interns on the HR books as "intermittent" employees.
This lets the lab start the clearance process and lets the student come back to work during school breaks. For HS interns that perform well, they also will try to keep them on the HR books, but would not start the clearance process. |
My DS got an offer at a consultant firm in 2023 and took it. I heard the same company is not making as many offers this year due to doge cutbacks. |
I don't think he really cares. |
My kid got one last summer. Then the government layoffs began, the government contracting layoffs began, and by April the offer was rescinded. Have a back up plan. |
This is what my son's internship did last year. DOD contractor. He ended up not doing any work for them during senior year but just started his full time job there last week. |
Then what’s the point of spending a whole summer interning? |
Some companies are very clear that they can't guarantee a return offer. My dept used to have summer interns (gone from budget cuts) but we had limited entry-level jobs on our team. We could only offer a job if one of those people was leaving/being promoted. I did always call former interns first if we had an opening.
A student is very fortunate if they are interning at a place that routinely gives out full-time offers at the end of the internship. DS just graduated (and started at job from last summer's internship) and said the only friends who had jobs on graduation day had gotten them from prior internships. It's rough out there right now. |
Well gee. There is something called experience, making connections, figuring out what you want to do with your life... Everything is not about an end goal when you are 20 years old, PP. |
I bet he could negotiate a late start. Plenty of students want to take the summer after graduation. |
