Essay topic about religion

Anonymous
Hi, DD is working with an essay tutor this summer for common app essay. Yesterday, I overheard them talking about a leadership position at school where DD leads students in discussions about Christianity (DD attends parochial). There are other topics they could have honed in on, but this one seems to have taken the lead. DD enjoys her religion classes and participates in Catholic life.

Is a topic like this going to be useless at more
STEM-oriented universities? DD interested in sciences and math, applying to a variety of schools like Case Western, Rochester, Lehigh, Pitt, Cal Poly, Baylor, and Villanova. Thank you.

Seems like a plus for Villanova and Baylor, at least. I think it’s fine as a topic.

Religion is relevant in Science. People wrestle with ethical dilemma, the role of science and enlightenment in scripture, balance the needs or options from science bs letting God take the lead(decision around life saving care and medicine). Honestly I’m surprised at a Catholic School this hasn’t been discussed before Senior year.

They discuss it in many of her classes (didn’t mean to imply it wasn’t). She really enjoys it so the topic seems a good fit. I was just concerned it wouldn’t land well at the other schools. Thank you!

The most important part about the essay is what does it show about your daughter? When you read it what do you know that you didn’t before just from the basic application information?
You want to think about the things you want the essay to convey about who your daughter is and her character. The topic is less important than that piece. Find those parts in the essay and emphasize them.

I think it's OK. It may be refreshing -- not a lot of kids write about religion. Definitely a plus with Villanova and Baylor.

It will be better than talking about your abortion (a real essay I read last year).

Honestly, I don't think it's a good topic. You can talk about service.

She'll do better if she focuses on the social and charitable aspects and the big questions of religion, not the supernatural answers she got from religion. Telling someone that she knows the answers to unanswerable questions is going to embarrass her and make her look intellectual weak.

Seriously?? What was the take-away? What an essay like this can say about the applicant? Was she successful?

Why not apply to Notre Dame?

DP.
It tells that she is owing her truth. More power to her and hope she is successful in her life. A young girl that gets pregnant needs whatever form of support she needs.

It tells me that the person is honest and has overcome a challenge that will no doubt leave a lasting mark on them.
