Tuition insurance ?

Full pay family with no known issues (ie mental health concerns etc).

Do people buy this?

We did it for first semester of freshman year. DC is a great kid, but we were a little worried about how successful their transition would be. Considering the size of the check we were writing, it was a small price to pay for some peace of mind.

I purchased it for freshman year. It wasn't expensive. Less than I've paid for travel insurance on a foreign trip.

I was worried about the possibility of snowboarding accident at spring break among other things.

Does the insurance only cover accident / illness, or does it also cover student drops out (especially for a reason that’s not a “verifiable” mental illness)?

Compared to private high schools, college tuition is paid by semester. Once the student is in apartment, you typically sign a one year lease.

I did for my kid's 2nd and 3rd semester after a friend of the family was in a accident during the prior semester that greatly impacted them. My logic was "this is a lot of money...."

After I considered the balance of our 529 plans -- that we have more than enough to pay for grad school and it isn't clear if DC will be going -- I decided I'd rather roll the dice and not pay the tuition insurance.
