plants that repel mosquitos, nearly full shade

Anonymous
Any suggestions as to what actually works?

The internet says catnip, mint, coleus, lavender, and citronella grass. I'm looking to plant in a damp area that is in nearly full shade.

to add, if it isn't clear: zone 7b or 7a

Also marigold, but you need to plant in very great abundance for any of it to have any impact.

No definitely nothing you can plant will work, sorry.

Use mosquito dunks and keep your yard free of standing water. Plants don’t work.

In this area plants will not work. I’ve tried for years.

This.

If you plant things that attract other bugs, you can keep the mosquito population down. This is not a quick fix.
You need native plants, and you need to leave more dead plant matter in the flower beds - sticks, leaves, etc.

This. Bring out an oscillating fan or ceiling fan. That's the only thing other than spray.

As others have posted, there is nothing that you can plant in enough quantities that its going to repel mosquitoes from biting you while you're outside in your yard.

A strong fan can both keep you cool and help "push" them away (they're not strong flyers - a windy day also keeps them at bay). Or, you have to spray with DEET to reduce the number of bites.

You can try to coordinate with your neighbors and set out intentional water pots with dunks inside them in the hopes of crashing your local population, but its not typically feasible to get enough cooperation.

This. The mosquito dunks work well. You have to remove any standing water. They can procreate even in a very small amount.

I have to remove water from a table, any chairs outside, and on and on.

You could also encourage bats. They eat them.

Screened porch.

Mosquito nets.
Bat houses.

In the end, there will still be mosquitos.

Interesting side note, mosquitos have been responsible for more human deaths than everything else combined. Billions of estimated human deaths over the last 100 thousand years.
