Neighbor's cat urinates on our front porch!!

Anonymous
We bought a house recently and realized our next door neighbor has cats. She has at least 5. All outdoor cats. Yuck. Anyway, I noticed last week that our front porch smelled strongly of urine. In the time span of the past few weeks, I've noticed the cats not only in our yard (backyard and frontyard) but sitting on our front porch. They frequently jump our fence and stroll around in our backyard. They creep me out.
Tonight one of our neighbors cats actually tried to come into our house while the door was open. So the real issue is??? My husband is extremely allergic to cats. He can be in the same room as one (not even touching a cat) and his skin will start to hive up. His eyes itch, etc. I'm not a huge fan of cats to begin with, but I can tolerate most animals to a point. I cringe when I see her cats. Virginia law says cats are free roaming animals but what if they're on my property more than hers? Besides having a conversation with her, what can I do? I don't want to make enemies with a new neighbor.

Can you get a dog?

Not much. You could try leaving some kind of non harmful repellant -- I am thinking something like bitter apple. You may also douse your stoop in nature's miracle to erase the smell of the urine to try and keep them from coming back. Grow catnip in some far part of your yard to keep them in the catnip and off the porch.

Forgot. Put sprinklers on in your yard. Aim one so that it falls over your front walk or the cats' preferred approach to the stoop.

Op here. A repellant will probably be best. We won't be getting a dog anytime soon (we have small children and dogs are a lot of work!). If they urinated on the porch in the past, will they keep doing it again and again? Anyone know why? Probably marking their territory, I suppose.

Can you or Dh urinate on her important things? Could you make sure that she sees you doing it? Or fling poop at her maybe? This will open a dialogue, at least.

If her cats don't stay away, I might urinate on her property!!!

Spray them with water.

Catch them with a net and call animal control.

I would simply shoot the cat in the face.

Go to Petco, go to the cat aisle, buy a can of Keep Off.

There, problem solved.

Look, if Va law says they are free roaming, there's not much you can do unless you want to be a cat killing asshole. It's like bitching about squirrels. Get over it.

AdequateParent gave great advice...but I'm especially loving the part about borrowing a dog. I'd crack up laughing if a friend of mine asked to borrow my dog so he could pee around her property. I'd be willing to lend him out, FWIW. The idea of it just made me giggle.

Add vinegar to that water!!

Agree the best solution may be to borrow a friend's dog for a weekend. That, combined with some squirt bottles filled with water should work.

capture and take to the city shelter. Perfectly within your rights.
