Janney Downgraded to 8/10

Those ratings are a total joke.

The ratings make no sense. Smothers elementary is rated 10/10 despite 3% of kids being at grade level for math and 12% for ELA, because it simply doesn't have a test scores rating.

Similarly surprised by how well Thomas does? Same thing! Just doesn't get test scores counted at all.

The other schools that get 9s and 10s are largely schools UMC AA populations because that's the way you get a good equity score (otherwise you actually do better overall if your white kids do worse on tests, because otherwise it tanks your equity scores which are measured only differentially and not overall; so it's not how well minority kids do but how closely they mirror the white population, which is insane).

Only state colleges for your kids from now on!

Ok, thanks! Wasn't familiar with the system. Just see it on Zillow and was curious.

Agree.

It looks like a big part is improvement in test scores, so if they're already high, it's hard to show improvement

10/10 for test scores but 7/10 for growth and 6/10 for equity.

IMO the overall rating isn't helpful. It's slightly more useful to look separately at the ratings for test scores, growth and equity.

Also, I'd approach all of their information with caution. It's usually old -- like the growth data seems to be based on 2023. Also, I was with a new school that started in the building of a closed school. Great Schools kept the data and reviews up for the old school even though it was a completely different school in the building.

Ask how they address classroom violence towards the teacher or other students.

Do you have information? Is that an issue at Janney?

Greatschools is meaningless

Janney is so expensive, it’s hard to imagine that it isn’t still mostly affluent kids doing fine.

The kids are great. The space is tight and that was the biggest problem day to day. The kid across the hall causing mayhem had a staff member with them at all times.

LOL anyone who pays any attention to Great schools is an idiot.

Any idea what caused this?

Wow. This is a devastating blow from which Janney may never recover.
