Tipping for expensive highlights

Anonymous
I just went to a new salon for a curly cut and highlights. I didn’t really focus on prices as they added toner and other stuff. The final price was over $650, which surprised me. I’ve always gotten highlights and cuts for around $300. My fault for not asking more about the prices!

Should I tip 20% of the total or is the expectation less when the service is so expensive? Adding another $130 seems a bit crazy, but it’s absolutely not their fault that I didn’t ask more questions about the costs and I want to be fair. They did a good job as far as I can tell.

Prices are insane. I wouldn't blame you if you didn't do 20%. I find most places tell customers the price before doing anything if it's going to be gargantuan. Shame on them.
That said, I tip 20% at my Salon for the services I get which is about half of what you got charged.

That’s a lot. Was it done by the salon owner? If so, don’t tip. Otherwise I’d tip 10-15%

Do you ever want to go back. Tip at least $120.

Gosh no. You don't tip for things like that.

That happened to me. I hadn't been for awhile due to covid. It was $550, with a discount, I tried hard not to hide my surprise.

I didn't tip, but my service was with the owner, so even when his services weren't astronomical, I didn't tip him.

This price is bananas but I would tip 15% (I always tip 20%) and then find another place.

The stylist gets 50% and $325 should be very good. I would not tip because when a process is that expensive then you should have been told.

Whoa! I’ve gotten highlights regularly for the last 20+ years. It’s never cost me more than. $350 with a cut. At $650 every six weeks, I think I’d go darker.

With the amount salon services cost now, are stylists raking in money? Genuinely curious.

Always tip if you want to go bad and get the same quality of service.

Hardly. You think groceries, housing, insurance, continuing education classes, utilities, healthcare are cheap right now?

These things were way more expensive in another country I lived in (Switzerland) and stylists never charged $650 for highlights. I think this is greed at this point.
