Do quarter grades matter at all?

Anonymous
My understanding is that only semester grades show up on transcripts. Is that accurate? And if so, do quarter grades matter in any way (beyond factoring into semester grades)?

I think one of my 9th grader's teachers entered something incorrectly, which bumps her down to a high B for the quarter. But she had an A third quarter so I'm trying to decide if it's worth saying something. If it doesn't matter I won't bother. Thanks.

It's not a big deal, and nobody will see it except you. When the grading changes next year, you'll need to be more aware, but for this year, you are good!

Thank you!

Nope. Currently in MCPS B+A=A, sadly.

Geez, back off and let your kid breathe. Let your student talk to the teacher. Your kid does the talking in high school. You stay in the background, Mom. Otherwise, your end up with a college student who cannot approach professors and expects you to do it for them. from now on, your kid does all the talking. If your kid wants to go to the effort trying to change her grade, it's up to her.

I had that happen with my kid too but in reverse order. She and the teacher discussed and let it go because the second quarter grade would pull her up.

Yes, yes, I know. But DC is off having fun with friends, breathing very well, and hasn't seen this grading mistake. I don't want to bug her if there's no point. So I'm posting here instead!

By product of the new grading policy, teachers will be fixing a lot more mistakes.

Do they look at MP grades for magnet/CES admission?

Yes, they look at one particular marking period only, one of the many problems with the current CES/magnet lottery process. But OP's child is in high school so that doesn't apply to them.

Why is that "sadly "?

Rising junior DD has a cumulative 4.0, but very few quarters with a 4.0. She relies heavily on the current B + A = A formula.

I made her go back and recalculate this year’s grades to see what they’d be in the new system. Most of her B + A semester grades would still be As, but she would have had a couple of Bs. The new system just relies more heavily on the percentage and less on the letter associated with that percentage.

Going forward, are quarter grades going to appear on transcripts? And 9th and 10th semester grades prob aren't going to be recalc based on how she performed in each quarter, right?

I’m assuming the report cards will continue to show only semester grades.

They will not regrade past years. I just wanted DD to see how the change would impact her.
