Innocent bystander shot at No King Rally in Utah

Anonymous
A "good guy with a gun" shot an innocent bystander while trying to shoot at a right wing nutjob who was going to possible shoot people at the rally. The would be shooter never fired a shot, but the "peace keeping" team, shot at the would be shooter, and hit the innocent bystander who died. The would be shooter is alive and in the hospital.

No idea if this "peace keeping" team was part of the organized security or they took it upon themselves.

Awful.

I just read this story--thanks for posting! I was confused about the "peacekeeping team" (who are they, who do they work for, etc.) and asked Grok about it. Below is the answer. IMO, this incident highlights the dangers of any type of organized protest in a country where so many people own guns and are comfortable walking around with them in public.

The "peacekeeping" teams at the Salt Lake City "No Kings" protest on June 14, 2025, were volunteers organized by the event’s coordinators, specifically linked to the 50501 Movement, a group opposing the Trump administration. These peacekeepers were not appointed by any official government or law enforcement authority but were instead selected by protest organizers to help ensure attendee safety. According to Sarah Parker, a national coordinator for the 50501 Movement, there were an estimated 15 to 20 peacekeepers at the Salt Lake City event, though it’s unclear if all were armed. The peacekeepers wore high-visibility neon vests and were responsible for monitoring the crowd for potential threats.

They represented the interests of the protest organizers, specifically the Utah chapter of the 50501 Movement, which aimed to maintain a peaceful demonstration while countering perceived authoritarian actions by the Trump administration. However, the organizers explicitly asked attendees, including peacekeepers, not to bring weapons, though Utah’s lack of regulations on public firearm carry allowed armed individuals to participate. The exact process of their selection, training, or whether they were paid or volunteers remains unclear, as the Utah chapter did not respond to inquiries about these details. The actions of the peacekeepers, particularly the shooting, are under investigation by the Salt Lake City Police Department.

It's always the right wing nutjobs who try to run over or in this case, shoot the protestors. I don't recall Dems attempting to shoot or run over Proud Boy tiki torch marches.

There was another video I saw (also with the neon green vests, so I think the same people) where there was a cranky older woman with a holstered pistol. She started to try and draw the pistol, and the green vest person behind her tackled her and pinned her to the ground to prevent her from shooting.

Thankfully prevented a potential massacre, but what a country to live in where this is the "solution" to mass arming the public.

This is why I oppose concealed carry. Having non LEO try to use their gun in an emergency around other innocent people is a recipe for disaster.

I just KNEW these were going to turn violent.

The volunteer security person who accidentally shot the innocent bystander also shot the would-be mass shooter. The would-be mass shooter had an AR15 and was running toward the protest crowd. This volunteer security person likely saved the lives of dozens of people. Cops would not have arrived in time to stop the would-be mass shooter.

Here's the wounded would-be mass shooter, Arturo Gambo (age 24), in the custody of the police....he looks INSANE:

The volunteer security guard is going to have a lot of guilt.

But it also goes to show that volunteer "good guys with guns" aren't expert marksman. I wonder if the family of the victim will sue, both the shooter and the organizer even though the organizer told security to no bring weapons.

This is why I'm in favor of common sense gun control laws.

Exactly. Adding more guns to the equation almost never makes things safer.

Wow. This guy looks a lot like Charles Manson.

It looks like the shooter with the AR 15 (the wanna be mass shooter) shot and killed the bystander. Not the peacekeeper.

Same poster who has now read more: it sounds like the man was indeed shot and killed by a peacekeeper.

Glad you corrected your post. I was wondering where you were getting the wrong information.

Interesting update: the "man with the rifle" that was shot may not have aimed or brandished the rifle, just carried it, and may have been seen at other rallies with a gun previously, as a liberal gun owner" type who was there in support of the No Kings protests.

If this is accurate, maybe we will all collectively remember why open carry used to be illegal - for exactly this reason. Merely carrying a rifle around is dangerous and can result in injury or death, of the person carrying or anyone nearby.
