If I rent an apartment to use primarily as a studio...

For an art business- just me working there, can I deduct the rent from my taxes? Or do I have to purchase a property.

Rent and utilities can be deductible business expenses. Keep good records.

Make sure your lease allows a commercial use if you have visitors. Probably wouldn't notice if its just you going there though.

And make sure the lease is under an LLC not your name. Keep the finances separate.

My niece is an influencer and has an apartment she uses just for filming. It's under her LLC and she gets to deduct the business expenses related to it.

Deductible from your art income, not income from an unrelated job you do somewhere else.

Curious, what would be the benefits of an LLC in OP's particular situation?

Dangit! Just made my afternoon martini and you made me spill some very nice gin laughing!
Some people on this board actually have a good sense of humor.

She does those ADIML, GRWM, and haul videos that tweens and teen girls love. I don't get it, I really don't. Why is watching those videos entertaining? She has a ton of followers and gets paid big money for her brand posts. I and her parents have told her to enjoy it while it lasts and have all strongly encouraged her to go to college. She's taking a "gap year" right now but has told her followers that she's not ever going to college because she's not an academic type.

So, no OF yet. But is she going to do this for the next 10 years? For life? At some point even your biggest fans aren't going to care what is in your 15 shopping bags after a shopping spree.

You don’t need an llc. You can deduct it as your office even if you are a sole proprietor.
