What cities do you recommend looking for in MD with strong public schools, where I could get a home for $500-600k? I’m also open to renting if I have to for decent public schools.

Olney - you can get a small house or TH for 500- 700. Near 2 metros, close to Rockville shopping. Schools good.

Columbia- TH from 400 to 900, SFH from about 500 to over a million. There's a lot of choices. Great area.

Maybe Urbana? My SIL loves living there with her 3 kids. I think there are definitely housing options in your price range. She is happy with the schools so far. Her kids are 9-13.

OP here. Thanks everyone for your recommendation. Can anyone comment on the quality of schools in Columbia? Is it safe there? Is the suburb getting better,, worse, or the same as it was 15 years ago?

Also to answer an earlier question… I work from home but sometimes go to meetings in DC and Northern VA.
