When did “fave” become “fav”? They shouldn’t be pronounced the same way.

When did “fridge” become “frig”? Ditto.

It shouldn't be fave. It's an abbreviation of favorite so just fav.
Frig is just dropping 2 letters.

I’m with you OP. I think it’s because they stopped teaching phonics. Kids don’t know what the letters mean.

Actually they’ve started teaching the kids phonics—my teens were not taught phonics extensively in school and now the primary grades ARE being taught phonics.

It’s not arguable that fridge and fave were first. The question is when did frig and fav (and apparently dup) come into use?

I remember reading a book in the 80s and didn't know what "natch" meant. There was no internet to ask, either!

Fridge and fave ARE the phonetic spellings to maintain the same pronunciation of those syllables.
