Nationals Fees

Just curious, anyone else being hounded by their kids soccer club to pay a fee to go to nationals?

On top of paying for flights, hotels, and rental cars for nationals, clubs want us to make installment payments for next year, order uniforms for next season, and pay a nationals fee? WTF!

Going to “Nationals” does cost money. If your team is a real contender, then it’s good to set expectations, budget and fund raise to go early on! Was your team at U12 last year, but this year you will play at U13? If so, welcome to the headaches associated with post-season regional and national games starting at the U13 level.

If your team wasn’t ‘all that’ last season, then yes, this seems extremely pre-mature. Be sure to ask what happens to the money if you don’t qualify for nationals or don’t sign up for ‘fake’ pay-to-play nationals type tournament.

No, being “hounded” by your club for more money is not normal.

There was a deposit with a VA club for Super Y in case of going to nationals but the deposit was refundable and the total cost was still less than 2 other offers for just the Super Y fee.

Only time I have seen something like that and it was legitimate regarding how they handled it.

Wow, so no one else is being asked by their club to pay extra?

What club asked you to pay extra?

Travel costs for nationals yes but we’ve never paid extra fees.

Did your club not say that it would be an additional fee before the season started? It’s pretty standard NOT to include nationals fee since you have to qualify first and they tell you this upfront in the breakdown of fees. The alternative is charging you more for something you don’t end up qualifying for, which seems far worse.

We paid an extra fee but A) we knew from the time we accepted invite last years that there would be an additional fee if we qualified for nationals and B) we aren’t being hounded for it. I’m not sure what the controversy is - if this fee isn’t included in your club and team fees, why are you surprised you have to pay it? This pays for travel and hotel for coaches.

No controversy, just asked if any other clubs did anything similar. To me, it looks like the club wants to send extra people who aren’t coaches to nationals. It also seems they haven’t booked the trips yet which means they haven’t secured good rates for the people traveling. If it were so cut and dry more clubs would be charging families. I’ll add that in addition to the nationals fee, the club also charges just under $900 more per season than other clubs in northern Virginia who ar won the same league.

My club doesn't charge post season fees up front. If a team makes it to the post season, the team manager says how much each family has to contribute for the coach's travel.
