Do you let your teen ride a electric scooter in the city?

DC is 13yo and a few of their friends have electric scooters. DC has been riding with them to downtown Bethesda and in the city. I am not sure how I am feeling about the safety of this. What do others think? I am sure there is no helmets especially if DC is riding with others from school.

No, I feel like it's not very safe, I would discourage your kid, especially in a group of other kids (because they tend to lose sight of safety with peers)

I was literally just going to make a post like this because I just saw a <10 yo girl riding one and trying to “j-walk” across a very busy street!

I feel like every kid in the suburbs got one of these. They’re freaking everywhere. And the youngest kids on them look like 4th and 5th graders. I can’t believe parents trust such little kids to have access to something that’s not only so dangerous speed and crash-wise but they can cover such a distance so quickly.

Nope. ER doc. Seen too many aftermaths.

My kid doesn’t have access to an e-scooter bc they are pricey. Sounds like rich kid worries. But we wouldn’t allow it.

I see kids flying through intersections all the time with no care in the world. Surprised we haven't seen more accidents. Most of these kids are not driving age so they don't understand traffic laws. I think it's a matter of time before some kid gets hit.

No. Electric scooters are very dangerous. Many kids need to go to the ER because of it.

Kids are always speeding on those thing. One once slammed into the side of my car in the middle of the road.

+1 never see kids wearing any form of safety gear with them.

No! My kids have asked for electric scooters for years but I’ve always resisted. They’re too dangerous.

No helmet, no way. Also: no scooter.

Kids do really stupid things on those scooters. I've seen them jumping curbs, riding down the middle of the street, "racing" each other while swerving into traffic, etc.

We live in an upper middle class suburb and every other primary school kid is on one of these things. They ride them 1+ mile away to an outdoor mall to grab lunch and congregate.

Depends entirely on the kid and how responsible they are.

However when it comes to any type of motorcycle like that, even if they are super careful, something will eventually happen. A random object in the road, a gust of wind, a bug in the face, a distraction, and other drivers hitting them.

Motorcycles get no respect on the roads unless they are in a gang of them.

No. Not safe. Neither are electric bikes. Not for kids. There should honestly be regulations around this and surprised there are not. So dangerous.
