Why does my kid’s middle school assistant principal keep telling the students not to come to school next Mon and Tue?

What will happen if they do go?

Name and shame the school--they shouldn't be doing that. My kid's school sent out an email earlier this week reminding parents that school is in session today, Monday and Tuesday for half-days.

Nothing will happen if they go, but just know that your kid could very well be bored and view the day as a waste of time. They will either have "fun" activities or free time, depending on how enterprising their individual teachers are.

They really shouldn't be doing that

What school

Because they're movie days?

In my kid’s elementary school they’re game days. The kids can bring in any card games or board games and they’ll set up stations in the classrooms. It’s the one time the kids can bring all their Pokemon cards and have a massive battle.

I’m not against this.

Must be a school without a chronic absenteeism problem. Our principal is bribing kids to come with lots of freebies and raffles and treats.

That sounds so fun. What a great way to wrap up the school year!

This! My fourth grader has been loving the last few days of school - extra recess, class kickball games, whole class card games, reading aloud- he has been asking to go. My Kindergartner has had recess basically all day, or playing legos, and singing songs. Basically what K should be all along.

Hardly anyone in my kid's high school is going to school next week, with the administration's blessing, but that's high school, where kids can get jobs, have test prep, and do other things without parental supervision. I don't think they should be encouraging absenteeism in elementary and middle.

A lot of teachers are already scheduled to be out, and many students’ families are already traveling. The curriculum has been completed, and grades are filed. Secondary schools are planning to have supervised work periods for kids who need to finish assignments to pass courses. Otherwise, teachers are cleaning up and looking for ways to keep the students safe and occupied. If more kids stay home, it’ll be easier to manage, and there will be fewer problems with bored kids making trouble.

What a sad and ignorant assumption that kids come to school to "make trouble." It differs by grade level for sure, but my elementary school kids both have had good educational content on Friday and I hope today as well.

I bet the kids will always remember that day.

+1 Name it and prove it or it didn't happen.
