| And opts to pursue an advanced degree instead, do colleges frown upon this? Is it considered not rigorous enough, or do the high grades matter more? |
Are you talking about the Career Programme or DP? |
| The Virginia advanced degree is not even something that is visible to colleges. It is also not very rigorous. Most IB schools let you take IB classes a la carte. A mix of honors and IN classes is a good plan if a full IB diploma is too much for a student. |
No, I’m talking about taking all honors classes and IB classes in 11th and 12th where applicable. DC is entering HS next year with three HS-level classes (2 of them honors) so was just wondering. The path they required him to fill out in Naviance (which is notional at best) is for an Advanced degree. |

My assumption would be that colleges will notice that your kid didn't do the most rigorous program possible.
Also, FWIW, the other kids in the IB program will be more intelligent and motivated generally speaking than in the other classes. |
| No. IB is better than most curriculums. |
| Depends on what college. My kid went from following an IB track to just getting a standard diploma, and was accepted into all the universities they applied to, mostly public. |
| I wasn't so sure about IB, but the amount of writing makes it highly rigorous, almost too much. DS was very well prepared for college and said that it was easier than HS. 100% acceptance rate for colleges where he applied. Only big drawback was that he had earned a lot fewer college credits than we had expected. |
Yeah, it's funny. My IB kid had a more demanding HS experience and was better prepared for college, but my AP kid started college with ~twice as many credits. (If I had a third kid, I'd go IB if they could handle it.) |
Tell that to the crazy anti-IB people in the FCPS forum. |
| My DD worked harder in HS for IB Diploma than she does in college. Good preparation. |
| IB prepared my kid well for WASP. |
IB is preferred curriculum for most HACK-level colleges |
| IB will be looked at more favorably. My kids went to an IB high school, but because they wanted to be in band, they couldn't fit to the IB schedule. It probably hurt them for higher level admissions, but they still went to a highly ranked school (top 30) and were very happy. |
