Can religion make you bad?

Anonymous
In my experience, religion kept me good or had no effect at all. However, I have seen religion have a negative effect on people, e.g., they don’t like people of different religions or no religion, they interpret Biblical verses negatively, using them to harm people .

Have you seen ways in which religion made people bad?

And, as I said before and will say again…here we go again.

Yes. Two women who married into my family converted to Judaism and as we say they "converted too far." Everyone in my family is Conservative or Reform and they wanted to be Very Orthodox - changing the way they dress, insisting on going to temple at least twice a week, wanting my cousins to change the way they dress, wanting to keep kosher, pray before each meal, etc. Both (separately, different sides of the family) wound up divorcing these women. They weren't the women the men married.

I wouldn't go so far as to say religion made them bad people, but religion inspired them to put religion before their relationships, which wound up killing their marriages.

Religion can become a problem when it justifies bad behavior, when it hides bad behavior, when it seeks out power, and when it becomes more important than relationships. Agree.

Have you ever seen any of those things happen?

Yes all conservative religions are bad all orthodox

Controlling others is an inherent part of the religion that’s very bad

Civil laws control others as well. But laws aren't bad, are they?

It sort of sounds like both women wanted a big change in their lives, and converting to Judaism made it possible. At the ultimate expense of their marriages, unfortunately.

Handmaid’s Tale is an example of religion going too far. We see this with religious cults. The extreme beliefs make people bad.

As far as I am concerned, many commonly held beliefs, with no scientific basis, constitute religions. And I have seen people get harmed as a result, physically and emotionally (for example, but not exclusive list, suicidal, self harm, anorexia), especially children.

This response is one of the smartest things I’ve heard in a good while. Smart, and to the point. I deduce the pp wields logic like a scalpel.

Civil laws are based on what is good for society as a whole. Religious laws are based on what's good for people of one religion, and may be detrimental to people of other religions.

religion certainly can have a negative effect on people, but it doesn't always. Sometimes it has a positive or a neutral effect.

Whole lotta mean girls in many churches. I remember one where public prayers were used as a way of spreading gossip “let’s all pray for Mary Sue: I heard her husband is cheating on her and she looks terrible.”
