Reid shut down alternative programs...

Without School Board's knowledge. 16 teachers were de-staffed with nowhere to go. Kids who are in the ALC programs will be absorbed into the alternative high schools. But, there is now far less to staff to provide services to them. The program that is for the most egregious offenders has staff being taken away. They believe they can plug any warm body in and get results. These students do not have parents that will voice their outrage to the school board. We want people to be aware that this is happening. Reid is hiding a lot.

Help me understand, which ALC?

The parents I met from Burke and Bryant at the Superintendent’s Family Vision Council meetings were all very passionate and well spoken about the needs of the ALC. I can’t imagine they wouldn’t be out there advocating. Many of them had active lawsuits against the county to provide even higher levels of care.

When I see the special needs classrooms for physical disabilities at our middle school they are always well staffed maybe even over staffed. At least 1 aide for every student plus the teachers and therapists and other interventionists.

Are you talking about the behavior related schools? There are quite a few of them. Perhaps they are consolidating because of numbers, space, the need to concentrate resources to improve access.

Both of those schools together have about 100 faculty and staff…

The proof is they de-staffed most of the staff and told everyone ALCs are gone next year. I don't know how to provide more proof than that? Parents are being notified to make changes for placement for next year.

DP. Well, there you go. Blame your union for not negotiating the protection of these positions in exchange for less than a 6% raises for other teachers.

Reids salary is outrageous. She makes more than whoever is sitting POTUS.

Do you have this in writing? What will the hearings office do if they can’t send kids to alternative learning centers, which is where they send kids? Keep them in the base school?

FCPS should be increasing special education budget, safety budget, hiring more SROS and security guards.

I think most parents in the county would support folding the ALCs into the existing alternative schools if that helps maintain staffing levels at other schools.

There is only so much money that can be spent on alternative programs, special education, and SROs.

There are no other ALC’s. The other sites you are probably referring to are CSS (comprehensive service sites- like Burke School) and students must have an IEP, and be placed there by the IEP team with parents consent. ALC are for kids sent by the hearings office, likely for issues related to drugs, assault of a teacher, weapons, etc.

Mixing special ed kids with kids from the ALCs is a terrible idea. Absolutely terrible. Both populations need very different things.
