How many exemptions should I claim?

Anonymous
I just started a new job and wasn't sure how many exemptions to claim. I am single and have one school aged child. I obviously don't want to owe any money come next spring so is there any way to determine the appropriate number of exemptions? Also, my child is now in the before school program at her school. Are there any child care credits I can claim on my taxes?

There are lots of w4 calculators that will help you figure this out

Wow. Two exemptions. Claim zero if you want to be sure not to owe at the end of the year.

You are entitled to the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, possibly a cafeteria plan at work, the child credit...

If I were you, I would go on line, find the 2009 1040, and fill it out. Add 3% to the bottom line of your tax liability. Use that as a guide. If you work your way through slowly with the instructions, all your questions will be answered.

Find a good accountant. You don't go on anonymous chat rooms for information about taxes.

Claim 0 or 1. After you file next year, adjust accordingly.

Also, don't think that you have to use an accountant. I've been filing my taxes just fine since I've had a job. Unless you have a complicated situation you can easily do it yourself online.

OP here. I didn't know there were online tax calculators so I will try that. My tax situation is about as uncomplicated as it gets. Single, 1 child, no mortgage or real savings, etc.

I find that site really helpful. Just don't estimate any of the information - use info from your actual paycheck. There's also a W-4 withholding worksheet (it's attached to the W-4) that will help you figure out what to do at the beginning of next year.
