| When brake light indicator comes on, owner manual says pull over to safe spot and get towed in, but do you all do that or just drive home and then go to the shop when they can get you in? How bad to drive car (v being towed) to shop if turns out low brake fluid? How bad if turns out is brake pads low? |
| The brake light comes on when the brake fluid level gets low, which typically happens when brake pads get worn out. I believe you can drive hundreds if not thousands of miles from the point when the light comes on and to the point where your pads are completely worn out to the metal plate. Even then you should still be able to brake. So I would just go home. |

Follow your manuals advice.
It’s not the “driving” that’s the issue, it’s the “stopping”. |
|
I’d get your car to shop asap. I wouldn’t rule out towing if you can’t get to shop safely.
Follow your cars manual. I can’t speak for your car specifically, but generally a “flashing light” means you need immediate attention. That flashing brake light likely has nothing to do with brake pad life, it more likely has to do with the fluid. It also is more likely an indicator of the amount of fluid (low) than its life. Low brake fluid may compromise braking. |
|
ABS light blinking can be a dual-purpose use of the light to indicate an ignition or emissions fault.
Read the manual carefully, search the web for info from owners of your specific model. |
| Also, you can find out how to check the brake fluid and add more. |
| It’s fine to drive. Go home or drive to shop. |
Don’t add more fluid. The low level is most likely an indication that your brakes need a replacement. Adding more fluid is not going to help with that. |
| Drive directly to the shop. |
This. If they are working and not screeching and grinding, they are fine. I learned to drive on a truck that didn't have brakes, just use your gears to downshift. |
Disagree. First thing is to read the manual to see exactly what the blinking indicator light means. |
OP mentioned that already. It's a "dummy light" apparently and just says to go to a mechanic.
|
This sounds different from the typical maintenance reminder or “dummy light”. OP said it was blinking and “owner manual says pull over to safe spot and get towed in”. That text sounds much different than “your brake fluid is overdue”. |
There is no such thing as a “dummy light” or some kind of maintenance light specifically for brakes or brake fluid. If the fluid is due for change it will show as a sub code when the yellow maintenance light for the oil change comes on. There is a red brake light indicator in some cars which comes on when the brake fluid falls below the minimum level. |
Sure there are. Depends on the vehicle. |
