My son wants to play with friends.

My son is 9 years old and has high-functioning ASD. He enjoys playing with friends, and he loves games like Minecraft and Roblox. He also enjoys playing outside. We’d love to set up a playdate if anyone has a child around the same age. We’re located in Gaithersburg!

Best of luck OP! Have you asked your DS' teacher who your son sits with at lunch, and who he gets along with in his classes? Some parents don't realize that teachers are happy to pass on this information.

I think this is a nice idea but agree it would be best to try to build a deeper relationship with a friend from school, the neighborhood, church, scouts, camp, and/or aftercare first. Ideally you want someone who the child has the chance to see on a some-what regular basis.

I have a 9 year old 3rd grader in Gaithersburg. I am not sure where you locate in Gaithersburg, but we are located near Quince Orchard HS. He is high functioning, friendly and silly. I don't think he ever plays Minecraft or Roblox because we don't have it at home. He loves YouTube, math, boardgames, and playing in swimming pool. He does a few sports for fun at recreational level. If you provide a contact in some forms, maybe we can try to plan something on weekends in July/August. His current summer plan is having fun at camps, shoot some basketball, playing in pool a few times, practice his swimming stroke, rock climbing, vacation and watching a ton of YouTube. We may also make him practicing his soccer skills and learning to bike if feasible.

OP here

Hi there,
Thanks so much for your post. It really warmed my heart! We live near Old Town Gaithersburg, close to where the old Lakeforest Mall used to be. But we’re often around your area too and even visit that new playground nearby pretty often.

My son also loves swimming and enjoys all kinds of sports. Just last year, he was mostly happy playing with me, but recently he’s been wanting to spend more time with friends. I think he’d be happy doing just about anything as long as he has a buddy to hang out with.

Feel free to reach out to me at study175@gmail.com. I will provide you with more information about myself.
I’d love to try and plan something for a weekend in July or August.

Hello, I have a 10yo who’s ASD1 and loves Roblox and Minecraft. We are not in Gaithersburg but it’s a half hour drive. If you like, we can try to see if the kids hit it off.

Have you looked into social skills groups?
