Help - dog pee in couch!

Anonymous
I have two dogs, one being a puppy who is finally housetrained (hurray!)

Unfortunately, I was an idiot when we first got the puppy and gave both dogs free rein on uncovered beige sofas. We quickly learned our lesson and purchased covers for the cushions (washable), but one couch has a urine scent and a barely-visible stain I can’t get out. I’ve tried nature’s miracle and a bissell little green (the machine will work well for upkeep going forward, but I don’t think it’s strong enough to remove the urine smell).

I got a quote from Stanley Steener to clean, stain protect, and deodorize two couches and it was over $700, which seemed steep. Do I have any other options, or is this what I should expect to pay? Moving forward, we’ll just keep the couch covers on the majority of the time and use the bissell for any minor stains (which it has worked well for). But this urine situation needs something more intense.

Stanley Steemer definitely won’t work for this either. They’re just going to do the same thing the Bissell does and then spray perfume on top.

I’m assuming that when you wash the covers, they come out smelling clean? I can’t imagine pee wouldn’t come out in the washing machine. Right?

So the pee is in the cushion fill. You have to either wash the cushion insert, or replace it. You can use a machine if you can fit it in there, or take it to a laundromat and use a big machine. I would try to wash all of them, so they wear equally.

If the pee is in the upholstery of the sofa frame itself, not just the cushion, the couch is probably a goner.

Thank you. This is what I was worried about. It is definitely just in the cushion - I guess I will go ahead and try to replace the cushion. Unfortunately, I am not sure if I'd be able to get the cover back on the cushion if I take it out.

OP here again: OMG. I just remembered I purchased a protection plan for the sofa (which is totally uncharacteristic of me, I usually decline those things) and this incident will be covered, if it can't be, the furniture will be replaced. Amazing!

Start by airing it out outdoors for few days.

Just have a new cushion made

Buy a hand steamer. Easy peasy.

Our handheld shampoo vacuum machine does a better job than Stanley Steamer. I was not thrilled to spend so much on SS only to be left with what still looked like dirty sofas.
