Has anyone successfully convinced their teen athlete to incorporate stretching/mobility work into their daily routines? My kid is very willing to work out and do sport-specific training, but besides a very quick (and I think ineffective) warmup/cooldown around lifting, does very little stretching. I see the injuries cropping up in his teammates and think that they would all benefit from adding more of this to their workouts and practices. Yes, his team does warm ups as a group, but I'm not super impressed with most of it.
Has anyone found a high quality stretching routine, maybe on youtube, that their teen has incorporated successfully? Most of my searches have pulled up videos aimed at older women, and that will not be motivating, even if it is good material. |

Have you tried googling stretches for the specific sport? Or yoga/pilates possibly?
I found some great YouTube videos for my son’s sport (baseball)- “yoga for baseball” |
Warmup BEFORE stretching. Most people make the mistake of stretching cold and that causes many sports injuries. |

My sporty teen DS rarely does a proper warm-up/stretch/cool down on his own. Will stretch for a minute or two tops.
I’ve seen some HS coaches make the kids do it properly, which I applaud. Other coaches seem to leave up to kids to do on their own. He ran track this spring and warm-ups were left to the kids. Plenty of kids seemed to get it, while others (mine) did the minimum before and after they raced. |
