Shower without a door

Anonymous
Hello,

We are remodeling our bathroom and turning our shower into an accessible shower, without a curb. Our designer is suggesting to leave it with no door. It's a large-ish kidney-shaped shower, so splashing would not be an issue. Anyone has one and can comment?

I will say that the door is often what people grab for when they start to feel unsteady, even when grab bars present. This results in a lot of accidents. It’s better for someone with mobility challenges to not have a door.

I have one and hate it--all of the warm steam escapes the shower so I'm always slightly cold. But, I love very hot showers.

What about nice shower curtain ?

Love, love our doorless shower. Unfortunately the kids have adopted it too, but I really can't blame them. It is so much more comfortable. Our shower/toilet is in a separate room from the sinks/tub, so it gets very hot and steamy - I also hate getting out into a cold bathroom.

^ I am realizing there are a lot of options for these types of showers. Ours is kind of an L shape, with floor to ceiling tiles. So you kind of go around a corner (where you hang your towels and they can stay dry) to the shower area. It is basically all enclosed so very warm. There is no glass, so it is easy to clean. it is very enclosed, so it stays warm. I hate having to open up shower doors to grab a towel and feeling the gust of cold air. So I like not having to do that.

Looking at other examples online, it seems that many walk-in showers are just plopped in the room with half a glass panel on the end with the shower head. I would not want that (for cold and cleaning reasons(

I have never used a doorless shower anywhere I visited that did not get the floor wet.

I am the PP who doesn't like it because it's cold, and I think ours would be considered L shape, it's tile, and the bathroom is in a separate room. However, it's a pretty big bathroom with a lot of windows, so that could be the problem. And also, I love really really hot showers.

Too cold imo.

We have a wet room with no door and no glass. Just a large open space with the shower fixtures on one end and a soaking tub on the other. It has worked great for us. The tile person was able to angle the tile near the shower slightly so the water drains well, and the floors are heated so it’s never cold.

I'm having a hard time picturing what you're thinking of without there being water everywhere.

We have and and there is minimal splash out of it. It's a massive square with a step down into it. Tile on 2 sides, one glass side and one with 1/2 glass wall and entry way. I was worried about it being cold but I've never had an issue with it. The bathroom also rarely gets humid or steamy from it if you run the fan. DH showers without it (no clue why) and it's sometimes slightly humid when he does but if you turn the fan on it's fine.

If you have multiple shower heads going at once, or a steam vent, they are kinda neat. With just one, you will get drafts.
