we visited the Pacific Northwest last summer and my HSer fell in love with Oregon. We visited Eugene during the summer so probably not a true visit but it was pretty, campus was nice, kids seemed happy, etc... I don't know anyone who went to Oregon so any experiences on here?
I am not opposed to the idea and I could see us eventually retiring on the West Coast. |

Class of '97 here. I haven't been back in 15 years but Eugene is easily one of the best college towns in the country. I loved my time there. You are 45 minutes from the coast, world class fly fishing, Excellent skiing, mild climate, basically no real crime other than petty theft. It would be a perfect place to retire.
My only concern is it went waaaaay left and I went a good bit right in the last 30 years. |
| Not exactly the answer you are looking for but in case helpful… we visited University of Oregon too on a road trip and my son applied and was accepted. He opted to go somewhere else but I have heard great things about the school. My son really liked University of Washington too (and that campus is even lovier) and U of Co Boulder. |
| Several students in my DD's SF Bay area HS choose to go to U of O and have loved the experience. |
|
U of O seems fairly generous with merit aid for OOS.
It’s a pretty stress-free application and admission and I don’t think there is much difference between in state and OOS. |
| It's pretty popular in our area (Denver metro). Very easy admission and not too expensive OOS. I'd also look at U-Dub, Gonzaga, and Whitman as other possibles depending on your kid's interests. |
| My son has lots of friends from his SF private middle and high schools who are attenting U of O and Oregon State. They are go-to schools for white males shut out of the UC system. |

As many know, the most well known school for track and field in the country. Eugene is called Tracktown USA”.
The track world refers to the school as Lane Community College. That is snarky and unfair. I was recruited there years ago, and figured out that it was necessary to hang with a group of serious students, which do exist. So in that sense like most other flagships. Current athletes indicate the same. |
| We visited in Feb just to get a true feel. My DC still loved it. Eugene and the campus are great. |
Utah is a better deal for Coloradans with the WUE. |
| I just counted and we know at least 8 kids who are attending from DMV publics and privates and have heard nothing but good things about it. There's prob going to be more interest because UO's Big-10 win. |
| Can a conservative attend? |
Yes, of course; why do you think that they are so good at running ??? Answer: Angry liberals chasing the conservatives. It's a win-win for U of O. |
| Both the school and Eugene sound lovely! |
| I moved to Eugene from DC about two years ago, and I am happy to answer any questions people might have. |
