Best dairy free "butters" and cheese

Anonymous
Cannot tolerate dairy anymore, pretty much out of nowhere. Had test. Lactaid doesn't help much.

So, I want good tasting subs, but also healthy. The spreads have a lot of palm oil and crap. Thanks.

I don’t know, but ask NuVegan what they use.
It might be easier for you to figure out what you DO want — and look for that, vs what you don’t, since fake dairy is going to have a lot of fake stuff by definition.

I’m interested in seeing what you find. Have you already tried dairy from non-US sources? And goat’s milk? Maybe try a tiny bit of chèvre and see if that works for you.

Go to traders joes and Whole Foods and wander around.
Miyoko cheese spreads at both of above are divine and nice for cheese board. Aldi has good mozzarella and cheddar shreds, Trader Joe’s has good parm, they used to have feta but discontinued it (mad). chao makes good sliced cheese, violife makes good cream cheese and shreds.
Country crock makes good butter sticks and spreadable butter, you can use butter sticks in recipes just like dairy butter.

Treeline is the best vegan cheese I’ve ever had. Miyoko and Violife are solid too.

I liked Tofutti cream cheese best. Violife is the next best if you can't do soy. I didn't care for any of the shredded cheese subs, better to just go without - for example, topping pizza crusts with vegan pesto (Trader Joe's has a good one) + roasted veg is way better than pizza with fake cheese. Similarly, I prefer a good sorbet to non-dairy ice cream.

I use Miyoko's or Country Crock plant butter (or refined coconut oil, depending on the recipe).

Elmhurst nut milks (only 2 ingredients) - I like hazelnut, walnut, almond
Earth Balance spread (for butter substitute)
Nancy's vanilla oat yogurt
Kite Hill chive cream cheese and also ravioli/tortellini

I love all of the above & I am not vegan.

Semi related- Jeni’s splendid ice cream Texas Sheet Cake is nondairy and its the best ice cream I have ever had- dairy or not!!

None of them are the real thing. Miyokos pizza cheese (comes in a bottle) is really good though. For butter I bake with coconut oil as a nondairy alternative. Look for recipes that contain it. It’s the only thing that provides the same richness and savory taste. Example, try making muffins or pancakes with it,

Miyoko's is the only not-butter that doesn't suck.

I'm told their pourable not-mozzerella is also good, but haven't tried it.

Earth Balance is great for butter.

OP, since yours isn't an ethical issue, you may find you can tolerate cheese from sheep's milk.

Earth balance spread and Van Leeweun vegan ice cream. I prefer soy milk to other nondairy. It’s gotten harder to find, but the Giant and 365 brands have the best price

Surprising since they add cream cheese to their ice cream.

There is no good substitute for butter. Just use olive oil or avocado oil when needed
