Hosted Work Cook Out

At my house. Very, very basic- hotdogs, hamburgers, baked beans, corn, potato salad, potato chips, Cokes and beers. Work gave me a budget and I hit it on the head.

This was after a group outing that was near my house and at the request of my manager. Families were invited and many came.

Today (Friday) one of the women 'complained' to me that our master bedroom (and bath) was locked. She said her 15yo grandson wandered upstairs to use a bath and found our room locked. I asked her why he didn't just use the half bath on the main floor or the kids hall bath upstairs and she said 'he didn't want too'.

I had locked our room because of guns and valuables, not that that is her business, but I'm betting the kid was looking for stuff to steal.

How would you respond?

I locked the door because my sex toys are too big to put in a drawer.

Weird that a 15yo went with a grandparent to a work cookout. VERY weird.

“I locked it because I didn’t want anyone in my room.”

I wouldn’t bother to engage. Your house and it’s fine not to open your bedroom to the public. I block off our entire bedroom area when we have parties. It’s our private space.

I'd basically laugh in her face. Yes, we locked the door because of nosy people who wander through hosts' bedrooms uninvited. And then I'd walk away.

Right? And who hosts colleagues for a work function at their house? Not unless I’m being paid OT with cleaning service! Host it in the conference room.

I've never heard of a workplace setting where people go to coworkers' houses, unless it's the boss inviting everyone over to a party.

Why do you have to "respond"? It sounds like the conversation is over.

This reminds me of when we had about 20 people at our house and my DH found his 20 yo nephew in his office in our basement. When asked what he was doing down there, he said "Looking for the cat." Sure he was. We are pretty sure he was looking to steal.

I think it is bizarre that this woman brought this up to you. She should have just told her kid to not go looking around people's homes. If there is a health issue or something she should have said so.

Well, you must not have a lot of experience in the world. Not OP.

"It's locked because it off limits.' end of story
What a jerk the woman who asked you!
