I would like to know if your child had taken this class during school year. If so, do you think they teach this class differently during school year than Summer? I read some posts about Personal Finance class over here and it seems like students were not benefitted from this class who took it during the summer. It is more of fulfilling the graduation requirement. We would like our child to take this class during school year if it would be more beneficial otherwise he can take it over the summer. Please advise your thoughts on it. |
I take it over the summer if there are other classes that he’s interested in taking during the school year; otherwise the school year is fine. I’m not confident at any 16-year-old would call this class “beneficial”. The majority of them aren’t gonna use these skills to later in life. |
Would it be better to take AP Eco instead of PF? |
| My son describes the class as a stupid waste of time. I’d take it in the summer just to get it out of the way. |
Hell yes take AP Econ if they can! I taught both courses (EPF and AP Econ). AP will be harder but at least it’ll be with kids that care. EPF since it’s everyone is like super motivated to super lazy barely make it across the stage. I liked teaching the course but you really reach a limit when the MO is since everyone needs it to graduate no one should fail and make it fun and meaningful. Trust me fun and meaningful lose value when every class has 7-9 students who dgaf about it |
Either way is a waste, won't learn anything take over the summer you can only get P/F. MY DD will be taking over the summer should be an easy class since all they need is a 60% TO GET P.... Check if you can still sign up is worth it. |
| Do it in the summer. |
Since you taught both of these classes, I would appreciate if you could kindly help me with these questions: How hard is AP Econ? Does AP Econ covers what EPF covers? Of course they are two different class but wondering how similar are these two courses? Do the kids learn more during school year from personal finance than summer? If some one takes it online during summer, which one they should take self directed ($130) or the online campus one($510)? I would like him to have some exposures to finance and eco so that if he likes it, can take it in college. Thanks! |
| Also, doesn't taking it over the summer fulfill the “online course” requirement that FCPS imposes to graduate? May as well kill 2 birds with one stone. |
Personal finance isn’t at all related to finance and eco like what you would take in college or as a business major. It’s basically what people should teach their kids about managing money and living in the world. If you are choosing online definitely take the self directed. This is not a course for learning about the world of finance and economics for a possible college interest. That’s AP Econ. |
The state imposes that- not FCPS |
| No need to take it in the summer! It seems like torture. |
I think you’re confused. It’s a very simply class that’s asynchronous. The majority of students choose the quick and simple summer route. |
+1 |
Ok but regardless, this class will fulfill this online requirement, right? |
