Mattress topper recs? I’ve seen sleepy head , Lucid, and viscosoft mentioned online

They are all the same. Just buy a cheap one because you will want to throw out it anyway after your kid finishes freshman year.

My kid liked sleepyhead.

Lucid 3" is popular

We have Sleepyhead - my niece used hers for four years and I expect my dd will use hers through college as well. It is pricey but super comfortable.

Styrofoam is bad for you and for the planet.
A bamboo mattress top is reusable and washable. At Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Niagara-Sleep-Solution-Bamboo-King-Size-Mattress-Topper-Mattress-Pad-Mattress-Cover-78x80-inches/2076593866

I agree with this 100%. For my son's dorm last year, my mom gifted him a top of the line Sleepyhead gel and copper infused one that cost more than $400! Guess what, even with all the hype and features like the straps that hook it to the mattress, it still moved around a ton, would regularly slip halfway off the mattress, etc. It's really about the foam. Just get a decent one from clearance (check macy's). My son will never again sleep on a twin XL bed so I'm holding onto it for when his little bro heads to college in two years in hopes of getting a little bit more back on my mom's investment.

Very happy with Viscosoft past 4 years.

I got one of those thin mattresses (not topper) from IKEA. Cheaper. They didn’t throw them away, why would they do that? Maybe a mattress lasts longer?

They’re huge and hard to transport so I think some kids just trash them.

Some kids live in dorms (and have Twin XLs) for just one year, while others do for all 4 years. Some live close enough to pack them home in cars, others don't. Mine donated theirs after sophomore year because moving out of dorms.

We've used Sleep on Latex. They cost a little more but natural and avoid that off gassing. Ours has a cover and has gone through three years so far.
