what “main”/protein to serve with mac and cheese

Anonymous
My sister and family are visiting soon, and I want to make mac and cheese for dinner one night (I make pretty good mac and cheese!). My husband said my teen nephews with want a meat type protein as well. I’d appreciate ideas for what meat (can be chicken, red meat, etc) will go well with mac and cheese. Thanks!

What about a hearty meatloaf? Normally I just put cubes of baked chicken in my Mac & cheese, but a slab of meatloaf will be appreciated. Props to your husband for looking out for the teen nephews!

I like PP’s meatloaf idea a lot. Other suggestions would be to think to the cuisine that does Mac & cheese as a side a lot — southern food - and do one of those pairings. Fried or smoked chicken, a ham or pulled pork.

It goes well with fried or baked crispy chicken and a fresh green salad or sauteed greens.

So you enjoy pork jerky, I see.

Pulled pork or pulled chicken
Or make it easy and get a rotisserie chicken

Pulled pork, which can be made ahead, roast chicken, or bbq brisket. Agree with PPs who suggested barbecue and comfort food meals that you often see paired with mac and cheese.
