REAL ID

I applied online and it said I need an appointment, but the appointments are not until July. Can I just walk in? Most of the locations nearby are all full until July.

Try a DMV elsewhere. Maybe it will be less booked up.

What state?

VA. The only ones with appointments are like an hour away.

Nothing like the last minute eh?

Make an appointment in July. Or go elsewhere. This is what happens when you don't plan ahead.

I walked in about a month ago at the Tysons DMV. They had a short line for people with appointments, and a longer line for the rest of us.

I tried that a few times the last few years. Nope. Even if everyone is just sitting around with no customers doing nothing, they won't see you unless you have an appointment.

Government at work. It's nationwide like that now since 2020 apparently.

Are you flying between now and July? If not just wait. You really don’t need it if you’re not flying

I'm flying in July. I thought I could use my passport but it expired recently.

Thanks.

Since you are flying n July, take the appointment an hour away.

Yes, you can go as a walk-in. They have a line for people with appointments and a line for everyone else. Be prepared to wait for hours. I had to wait more than an hour past my appointment time when I went in March. The walk-in line was probably an hour just to check in, and the waiting room was packed.

I would take the appointment an hour away. Even with the 2 hours of driving, it will be faster than the walk-in line.

If you do walk-in, try to go at the beginning of the month (end if month gets all the people with registration/renewal issues) and get there as soon as they open.

I did it as a walk in at one of the ARL locations in March. 20 min wait mid day.

I walked in to an Arlington DMV the week before Real ID became mandatory for flights and waited less than 30 minutes. You can put your name on the list online before you go.
