| It looks like the county passed a vote that they will now have a union. Is there a way for county employees not to be on the union? |
| When everyone at a workplace has to be in the union, that is called a closed shop. Its pretty rare. Its much more common for membership to be voluntary |
| Your title is so misleading. The workers voted. That’s how democracy works. It’s not “forced.” |
Its not rare. When I workd for Montgomery County we were forced into the union, no opt out. |
Hardly anyone voted! That’s how they won. That union is horrible. Many don’t want them. |

You are never required to become a union member. You are permitted to opt out from membership.
However, in the private sector, you can be required to pay towards the cost of union representation (costs of negotiating the contract and processing grievances). In the public sector, you can just be a free rider (the union is still obligated to represent non members in the bargaining unit regardless of whether they are members.) |
