Have you been to the Sanderling?

If you’ve been to the Sanderling in Duck, do you recommend it? Thanks for any input.

I haven’t stayed but I have been many times for dinner or to the spa. It’s nice! Right on the ocean, decent food and drinks, quiet and relaxing. I think for the price point, if I was with my husband and kids, I’d just rent a house in duck but for just me and DH, it would be lovely.

Many of the reviews say it’s dirty and the service is bad but the pictures look very nice!

OP here. Yes, the reviews kind of scare me. But it does look nice. A shame if it’s as dirty as they say. I don’t know anyone who has stayed there.

It sounds crazy but there is a lovely oceanfront Hampton Inn there in a great location. Stayed there probably 10 years ago with DH, left our toddlers with my parents. Reviews then were good and we liked it. Maybe check the current reviews?

Yes, but not since 2019. It was quite nice. Rooms were big and lovely. The service was not great. They’ve just renovated again.

We stayed there years ago and still get ads from them. Supposedly, they just renovated the rooms (I got an ad recently).
7+ years ago, it was all insanely overpriced, and I remember being nickeled and dimed. The outdoor pools were fine. The indoor one (and the gym) was fine but you had to cross the highway , which was annoying. They have staff that set up chairs in the beach which was nice.
There are not a lot of decent hotels in obx if you want to stay for a few days. It is pretty, and/but you can't see the ocean from the dunes from most of the floors.

I wouldn’t call north 12 a “highway.”

No but there is constant traffic all day. A 2 lane road with highway volume.

I have pretty high standards and have stayed in some very nice places so I’m not evaluating Sanderling without context of what “nice” is. We went there once, for less than a week, and in the very early season (basically now).

It’s not posh, for sure. It’s not going to be confused with the White Lotus.

But it’s *fine*. It was clean, in decent repair, but was well-worn. The pools are adequate, well maintained beach exclusive for the property.

We only had 1 meal on the property - unremarkable but pretty standard for hotel food.

It’s an upscale Courtyard+resort+beach. We’d go back if friends were going or it made sense for some reason but we’d probably not go back out of the blue. But that’s just as much about the outer banks as the property itself.

It’s mediocre which is all you have to be when you are the only game in town outside of the Hampton Inn.

Food is meh; service is pretty bad.
