I didn’t go to school in the US and I’m not familiar with the high school system here. Is it correct that homework is graded and included in subject marks in high school? How do teachers manage this as I imagine it would create a huge workload to grade each lot of homework for all students? |
Just for completion, not accuracy and is 10% of the grade (math and subject with quarterly assessments) to 20%. |
That's crazy, 25 years ago all(most) homework was graded and much of it was handwritten - teachers were able to handle it. Now my kid barely does anything at home and still gets all As and extra time in school to work on projects. Things are just not as rigorous. |
This is a recent (i.e. last 10-20 years) change. HW accounts for very little of a student's grade and to the extent that it is graded, it's primarily related to completion. |
Depends. Some homework is graded for accuracy. My kids have only had it count for 10%. |
It depends on the teacher. It really varies. |
Fewer kids and fewer assignments. It seems like all my kid learns is worksheets on online versions of worksheets. Rather than any lectures, instruction, etc. |
in McPS all the PP (which includes most homework) is totaled and then used for 10% of grade. I no HS, most grade for accuracy not just completion, but it does vary. The grades are often way behind so it’s actually really hard to see if your kid has forgotten to turn in homework until it’s way too late.
There is wide variation in how much homework, when and how it is turned in, etc. |
Clearly there is lecture and instruction. |
It absolutely creates a huge workload for teachers to grade homework and classwork assignments. Couple that with limited planning and free time and you know why teachers are getting burnt out. |
