How good is PYBL?

We didn’t know PYBL existed and missed tryouts. Not sure what else to do this summer. Basketball is such a world of gatekeepers!

Its a joke. Full of reclasses pretending they are middle schoolers.

You really didn't miss the tryouts because most of them were rigged with preselected players from top AAU teams (Takeover, Durant) or DC school teams. DS's teammates and coaches warned us of this pre-select favoritism but I brought DS to a tryouts for a good workout. DS's teammate went to multiple tryouts and only made one team despite being a big and a great shooter and defender.

The teams are hand picked beforehand and completely unrelated to the location of the team.

Most of the kids are lying about their age or grade.

No practices. Just games for pre-selected all-stars players to show their skills. The kids are good, work hard, and play tough. But it's not there for development. It is baptism by fire for the uninitiated though. Alpha types thrive

Heard the same thing from others about teams being pre selected. A couple teams had a few slots open I heard. Know a couple teams made up of top players from top teams.
For the summer I would focus on camps and skills training. There are so many good camps with top coaches in this area. A kid would get good skills training and then get to scrimmage with other campers. Almost all the private schools offer camps. Seeing more and more interviews with nba players who have taken their kids out of travel ball and had them just focus on skills and training until high school.

What is PYBL?

PYBL is a summer league based on location- pg county, Montgomery county, Fairfax,etc...
People say its more of a showcase for players to show themselves than anything else.

Now it's evolved into AAU coaches picking top players and friends to showcase for private high school coaches. Many of the teams were preselected weeks beforehand but once tryouts started, coaches were still juggling to swap top players.

But, they will select a few others to ride their bench. My son was selected for an exclusive team after tryouts but he was told he would likely not play much for a game if at all. We rejected the offer--not worth our time to drive in traffic to these games to just watch from the bench, and my son is too good a player to waste time sitting when he can train or play for a fun team.

This. At 15U, kid moved from a top AAU team where he was on the bench to a lower level team where he played all game with both the 15U and 16U teams in tournaments. That was much better for his development as a player.
