Summer swim brings out the crazy

Anonymous
Day 1 of summer swim practice and I am already sick of the odd competitiveness that crops up with some normally laid back parents. One woman in particular does not hide that she sees my DD as her child's competition for A meets. These kids are 8. How am I going to deal with a summer of this?

By realizing that none of this matters. Just because everyone around you is insecure and competitive doesn’t mean that you need to be. You’re here to enjoy summer swim and that’s it.

Avoid that mom as much as possible…sit elsewhere. Try to keep your kid oblivious to the nonsense and let her enjoy the fun of summer swim! Keep the message that summer swim is for fun!!

What exactly is the so called competitor mom doing. Is she cheering her kid on? Or insulting your precious?

Either would be obnoxious at practice

I overheard a parent at practice talking last night about his 10 year old and how basically his kid was the next Olympian. That their club team needed to be good with them not being able to attend club practices since she love summer swim practices. Also apparently not meeting club attendance requirements during the year due to other sports. That they need to deal with it because they needed her because she can make JOs and if they don't like her lack of commitment NCAP would kill to have her.

It was honestly kind of shocking and insane. The tone was crazy. I think the parents he was talking to were just floored by the hubris.

Avoid her. I am a rep and parents of young kids can just get weird. Hopefully your team focuses on the kids competing against themselves and their own times, not beating one another.

I’d bet the ranch that the crazy parents are either in charge of the team or not volunteering at all.

Read a book during practice or “take a work call” (i.e., watch videos or play games with your headphones on). Time at meets. The other timers are usually pretty chill.

If the crazy parents are in charge … join another pool in 2026?

They usually are the ones that due the minimum in my experience. Gives them more time to hover over their kids on deck and make sure that the coaches are focusing on their kid.

Ugh I felt this yesterday. Another mom
Pointing out that her daughter moved up a lane. Just have fun it’s just summer swim.

OP find the parent group that is off to the side and not talking about their kids. The ones that don't seem to know they are on the pool deck. You will be happier. OR, parents of a different age group.
