Favorite Seasonal Foods -- Late Spring, Early Summer

Anonymous
I've been thinking about how foods are so much less seasonal than they were for earlier generations given how advanced food transport is and how ubiquitous freezing is. It still feels so nice to eat seasonally though, and at this time of year I think of certain things. What do you think of having in May and June? And how did you have it?

For me it is:

Asparagus. Fresh steamed or broiled with lemon. Cream of asparagus soup.

Strawberries. We had these in the garden, and when we had a lot of them my mother would make a pavlova with macerated strawberries.

Artichokes. We only had these once or twice, in the spring, because they were expensive. They would be steamed and we'd peel the petals off one by one and eat them by dipping in melted butter with lemon juice, scraping the meat off with our teeth.

Peaches. Any preparation.

I usually don't buy corn and watermelon until a little later in the season, but I've had really great ones so far this year.

Asparagus - the Bobby Flay green peppercorn vinaigrette recipe, as well as a longtime family recipe using prosciutto and cheese. Cherries and corn a bit later in the season.

Cherries are my fave. They are in the stores now, but I didn't buy them assuming it is too early for them to be any good.

I consider ham a spring food. Probably because of Easter. And ham means leftover ham for ham salad, which I love, and split pea soup.

Per the pick your own at Butler’s Orchard, only strawberries are available now until mid June when some other veg/fruit become available. Asparagus was available but is done now.

Anyway, I associate asparagus and lemon in spring, and strawberries late spring/early summer.

I can’t wait for peaches, plums, blueberries, watermelon!
