EA and Merit Money

I’ve seen conflicting opinions about whether applying EA improves or diminishes a strong candidate’s chances of being offered merit money.

Thoughts? Do you think this is different by school? Or private vs. public? Or higher ranked vs. lower ranked?

Any real life examples (to the extent you feel like you can assess “what would have been” had your DC applied the other way)?

I have never heard that applying EA can reduce the odds of merit money, and I can’t imagine why it would work that way.

I think someone said that in a different active thread re Syracuse. But maybe I misunderstood?
