My 6.5 year old has adhd and needs pretty constant entertainment. We have enjoyed Disney world and a cruise with him. Any other vacation ideas that your adhder has liked? We have a toddler and a baby as well, so overall family friendly appreciated!

I have 3 ADHDers, and their favorite trips have been Tokyo/Asia, Yellowstone, London, and NYC. |
Club Med. They will take your child at 9am and return them after dark - with a short break for dinner. My kids, when they were younger, loved it. Constant stimulation. |
Our favorite trips have involved lots of hiking and instead of hotels, booking cabins in campgrounds so they could be outside during downtime. Cooking over a campfire was a great bonus. |
+1 The New River Gorge in West Virginia is fantastic for this. Whitewater rafting, swimming, horseback riding, hiking in the national park. Just fantastic. I would think in terms of keeping the child engaged frequently in activities, not "entertained." |
I actually have found that vacations with a lot of activities outdoors are great for my child with ADHD. They don’t need constant stimulation like activities, nonstop, that’s actually going to lead them to more burn out agitation, frustration because they will be overstimulated. |
How do the baby and toddler travel? Honestly when mine were that age we basically stayed close to home. I remember one year we went to Pittsburgh and had a great time walking along the river and going to the children’s museum, then went to the seven springs ski resort. I think another year we went to Hilton head and just stayed in a hotel on the beach with a really nice pool and free hikes to ride. |
We're mostly inattentive ADHD with one hyperactive ADHD person, and we've done both city and country vacations: visiting family in capital cities in Europe and Asia, going to Eurodisney, hiking in the Alps and around Mount Fuji, going to Yosemite, and other national parks, the midatlantic coast, visiting zoos and museums...
Normal things. I hate renting a beach house and doing nothing, so we try not to do that. |
My kid with ADHD (now 11) is very into science--so places with kids museums and science museums are always a hit. I try to balance that with outdoorsy stuff--renting a house that has woods or a creek on property (or nearby) was hours or entertainment (and one parent can stay home for baby/toddler naps while the other is outside with the older kid). The toddler would also presumably love splashing in a creek.
Mine also loves the beach--but that's harder with the toddler and baby. Something to keep in mind for when they're older. Honestly, I'm not sure we've done a vacation that my kid hasn't liked? The ones he asks to repeat most frequently are Disney, Universal, and the beach. (Though if we bring up any past vacation he pretty much says "we should go back there", so?) |
My ADHD kid loved club med because of the constant stimulation. Learned to sail there and it became a lifelong hoby. As he's gotten older, we've enjoyed lots of ski trips, river rafting out west, vacations oriented around sailing and other water activities, and mountain biking trips. Vacations where we sit on a beach or stroll through museums are not happening. |
If Disney worked or the cruise, why not do it again? Maybe to Disneyland or a different set of islands.
How do the other 2 travel? What keeps him occupied at home? Could you do the beach and "copy" life at home? If so, (although I know this board isn't a fan) I'd do something like N. Myrtle. There are plenty of activities going on to keep everyone busy and/or sleeping well, if you do a condo on the beach with a great lazy river. And I think N. Myrtle is better to stay in and then do stuff in Myrtle. Could even rent a boat one day. Love the Club Med idea. |
Agree -- if it works, do it again... we love cruises for our ADHD kids. Also agree with Club Med, they have great children's programs. |
My kid has adhd and as long as we don’t expect her to just sit around any vacation has been fine. Even being on the beach is fine, she’s in the water playing. She an only too but pals up with other kids on the beach. |
None. |
