What are the public schools in the district that offer opportunities to the students to travel overseas for educational purposes (languages, cultural immersion programs). |
DCI offers an immersion trip. The school pays for it too. But you have to be in the advance language track and apply.
You can also do a semester study abroad in high school. The school has some international affiliations with all 3 languages but you can do study abroad anywhere. I’m sure there is a process you have to go thru and such. I’m interested in this once my kid gets to upper grades. |
DC Bilingual goes to Puerto Rico. |
MV 5th graders go to Puerto Rico. |
At BASIS it varies every year based on interest, teacher availability, etc.
Recently, there have been trips to South Africa, Costa Rica, China, and France. |
There is the DCPS Study Abroad program:

Oyster-Adams students go to Costa Rica in 8th grade. Those students who take Mandarin in middle school go to Taiwan in 7th grade. My children participated in both trips and LOVED their experiences! |
It’s only in the summer and 5-12 days. It’s more of a cultural program, not true study abroad where you are actually studying at school during the academic year. |
Last time I heard, they were scrapping that because of “equity” issues. |
Stokes goes to Panama |
It also has preference for lower SES families. |
Where does the money come from to pay for these trips? |
World Language Trips at Deal MS:

Families pay for it out of pocket. Our charter helps to subsidize the FARMS families. I would imagine PTO fundraising at other schools might also help subsidize the FARMS families. |
The DCPS summer trips are fully funded by DCPS, including luggage and passport fees for students who need it. PP was correct that they prioritize Title 1 schools for spots. It’s a fantastic opportunity. |
