A Deadly American Marriage on Netflix

Has anyone watched this? Do you have an opinion of what really happened with this family?

Haven't heard of this but I am going to watch.

PP here. I watched it. I think the wife is a compulsive liar. I don't think the husband was abusive. I don't think he murdered his first wife.

What I can’t figure out is why her father went along with it. Do we think she killed her husband and her father took responsibility because he thought his FBI background might buy him leniency?

I agree that the wife is a compulsive liar. But the audio recordings of the husband made me really uncomfortable and I could believe that he became abusive at times. Perhaps it was a new thing relating to the medical issues he brought up to his doctor. In the recording he kept harping on the food thing and yelling when she tried to distract the kids, who were crying and telling them to stop fighting.

Maybe because I was fresh off the Karen Read doc, where everyone involved is basically terrible, but I had a hard time seeing the husband as a saint after those audio recordings, and I really didn't like his family. Trying to remember that they're speaking now after the fact, but it sounded like they felt the wife was beneath them and would never consider that the children would want to stay with the woman they considered their mom rather than move back to Ireland just because they were Irish citizens. Still, the wife and her dad were very strange, especially the dad. I really have no idea what happened, but I felt awful for those kids.

Obviously the wife and her father committed a planned murder. Their ridiculous lies under questioning undercut every claim they made. The au pair had a long history of compulsive lying. After they married, she systematically attempted to poison the kids against their dad while continuing her lying.

It is an outrageous travesty of justice that they are free to walk the world.

It makes me wonder what shady things the father did in the FBI since he can lie with absolutely no hesitation. He would probably pass a polygraph because he is so devoid of conscience.

I thought the "twists" 2/3 of the way through were lame and not remotely credible. The recordings she made of the victim made him sound nothing but exasperated at her manipulation; certainly not abusive.

They both are such dimwits though...the emails just full of misspellings. What did he do for a living that let him live that life of luxury while he couldn't tell the difference between "loose" and "lose"?

I don't know what to think based on the documentary, which is not the best. Raised more questions than answers, and pretty scattered in its presentation. The evidence is all over the place. I'm inclined to think it was heat of the moment because both the wife and FBI agent father could certainly have planned something less violent and bloody. The grandma feeling the need to give the kids a code word and the urine in the pajama pants, and likely neck bruise, raised some reasonable doubt. Kids clearly brainwashed by the deceased's family, so their input not helpful.

The dad made a very, very bad decision to marry this woman and move so freaking far away from home. He did not prioritize his children. The second wife and her dad were psycho and enmeshed. The kids' dad made a big mistake and put everyone in danger. I hated all of them except the kids. What a mess.

The biggest question for me was what caused the death of his first wife. The doc mentioned that every expert, even ones for the state, didn’t believe she died of an asthma attack.

Opinions are divided, not clear one way or the other. Like everything else in this case.

I agree that the doc leaves more questions than answers. A very bizarre situation from all sides. Like the Karen Read case, I came away with a pretty negative opinion of all involved. There is also drama between sister Tracy and the remaining siblings over money and fame. They feel she profited off her brother’s death.

+1. Also don’t get the explanation Molly gave for them moving from Ireland to North Carolina. Quality of life, education etc all seemed better back in Ireland but I guess she wanted to be closer to her parents

He was whipped, I guess. It was the worst thing he could have done. He also likely didn't know how psycho her father was because she lived with him and the kids in Ireland and had no family around her.

With regard to the recordings, she said she had installed voice-activated devices all around the house — INCLUDING THE BEDROOM. Why did it not record the “fight”?
