How did you find your ASDEC tutor?

I am new to ASDEC. How do you find the tutors?

You go through ASDEC.

From their website:
ASDEC Referrals to Academic Language Therapists

ASDEC staff provide referrals to diagnosticians who can provide a full range of educational testing and other evaluation services. If testing results reveal learning disabilities in reading and/or math, ASDEC Clinical Directors will refer parents to ASDEC Academic Therapists. In addition, ASDEC also works with parents directly to help them navigate the diagnosis and treatment of their child’s learning disability by offering a range of free and fee-based consultation services. Do you have to have an official diagnosis for them to work with your child?

Our sixth grader is on waitlist for private testing but we don’t want to wait any longer to get her the support she needs.

We had a private diagnosis already, so I am not sure, I would call or email ASDEC.

The information from a diagnosis is really helpful but not strictly required. Since you’d want them to do the assessment I would call them. They have a summer program in July that may still have spots if you are available. You can then continue with your therapist after the program ends.

There are a number of us CALT and CALT-in-training here and if you post your general location and whether you are open to in person or virtual we can help make the connection for you. I am a CALT-in-training (I work under the supervision of a master CALT for two years until I am certified) and I work in Columbia/Laurel/Olney/Rockville - basically 30 minute radius from my home. I know others who cover other parts of the DMV.

Another thing you can do is go to our professional association ALTA (altareads.org) and use their finder. Most fully certified CALTs in the area are listed, and you can contact them directly.

Going directly to ASDEC and having a conversation about your child and their specific needs is a great first step, though. Let us know how it goes and if you need further connections!
