Can a lawyer please tell me what to say to my redneck relatives

Who think that Harvard can arrest people, but hide this information from law enforcement agencies and courts.

Yeah, because your stupid redneck relatives are really going to be open to what a lawyer says.

Like pigs in mud, they're wallowing in aggressive ignorance. They don't want out of it

I talk to a MAGA acquaintance regularly. He doesn't read news outside of his "trusted sources", which are different from mine. I keep in touch with him because we have a background in science in common, and sometimes I see a glimmer of doubt when I explain my side of things. We don't talk about cultural matters, which are by definition subjective. We exchange what we believe to be facts. We butted heads on the Abrego Garcia case recently, on what was known about him, and realized we weren't at all operating on the same factual basis.

I think the important thing is to keep talking.

Not a lawyer but have you tried just telling them they're stupid?

Harvard isn’t a governmental agency so if they took a person and removed them to a different location against their will it would by definition be kidnapping, not arrest. And those people could file a criminal complaint against Harvard as well as sue Harvard civilly for damages.

But I’m not at all sure explaining that will help. What does your relative think happens to these people that Harvard arrests? Is there like a secret jail under the quad? A gulag in New Hampshire? I’m having trouble even following what the conspiracy is.

You can’t even write a legible post, I imagine those rednecks are smarter than you.

Did they also believe the Comet Pizza conspiracy? Sounds pretty similar.

You should watch out of shadows.

Neither a lawyer nor a Harvard expert

What does he mean by arrest if law enforcement and the courts aren’t involved? I guess they probably have a security office where they might take people temporarily while they sort things out and see if there’s a problem that requires either university disciplinary action or the involvement of the police.

Why would they do that? Harvard has the ability to notify police or other agencies if they have concerns, they have the right to expel or fire individuals they feel are no longer aligned with their institutions goals. There is no sovereign jurisdiction for Harvard, it would amount to a private militia and that is prohibited by our laws… here’s the thing you can’t have a logical argument with crazy, this is so absolutely absurd that there is no meaningful response.

Is there a specific incident?

I mean, schools have a campus police force that has discretion. It’s possible to be detained by campus police without any formal charges or public reports.

The more you know. They are sworn officers.

Keep talking. Don’t get upset. You hear what they’re saying. Ask questions. If the opportunity arises, share your thoughts.

You tell them they’re right.

Seriously, you just nod your head and smile and say "enjoy your night" and then walk away.
