The GOP in the Senate overrode the GAO’s and parliamentarian’s ruling this morning by using a technical tactic by to amend how the Congressional Review Act is applied. In short, the Senate decided they will now directly determine when the CRA can be used to revoke waivers and regulations, rather than the GAO and Senate Parliamentarian. They then used this new authority to revoke California’s ability to set its own clean air and vehicle emissions standards.
I expect they will use this precedent to violate the Byrd Rule with new Big Beautiful Bill, which includes many policy provision not related to spending or taxes. The filibuster is effectively done, folks. https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2025/05/22/congress/senate-nixes-california-emission-standard-waiver-00365205 |
Good overview of what happened. They had to take 10 party line votes on changing the procedural rules of the Senate to accomplish what they did:
https://rollcall.com/2025/05/22/senate-sidesteps-parliamentarian-widens-reach-of-cra/ Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA): “ Under this logic, the Trump administration could send an endless stream of nonrule actions to Congress, going back to 1996, including vaccine approvals, broadcast licenses, merger approvals and any number of government decisions that apply to President Trump’s long list of enemies.” He’s not wrong. |
Nope.
I hope, if and when the Dems retake the Senate, they pass abortion protections, statehood for DC and a host of other items that would never have passed because of the filibuster. |
Manchin and Sinema looking pretty stupid now. Everyone said the Rs would blow up the filibuster the second it was convenient for them. Manchin refused to see it. |
They didn't "refuse" to see it. They were both basically republicans, and in the case of Sinema, a total astrotruf plant. |
Manchin and Sinema don't care. |
The Hyde Amendment has been in place for decades and there hasn't been a single federal dollar spent on abortions. The Second Amendment is in full force, though there is a national consensus to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill that the GOP somehow opposes. Biden didn't "pardon federal death penalty cases" - those people are still in prison and will be for live. Exactly what is your point? |
You might be right about sinema, but I think Manchin truly thought republicans were acting in good faith and that by preserving the filibuster he would prevent extremist policies. He looks like a total fool. |
Republicans have always been and will always be cheaters. They wouldn't be in power if they weren't. And now they are taking our country apart. |
No, PP and others shift funding based on the fungibility of money. Biden took the death penalty off the table by edict. Sorry, should have phrased it better. There are thousands of rules and policies on firearms ownership and purchases that circumvent 'shall not be infringed'. Again, you play games *. Don't be surprised when your adversaries do the same. * One I completely forgot. Democrats changing the economic term 'recession' because they did not want to be associated with the last two consecutive quarters of sinking GDP. |
Don't the Republican idiots realize that they have set the precedent that the Democrats can now use to steamroll them when they start taking the government back with the midterms? |
If the Dems ever retake the senate they will reinstate the filibuster. Old Chuck is sure they really like him. |
Who? Name any democrat in leadership who would do that? The country is gone. The best that can be hoped for is to break up as a country. |
No, the Democrats will win the midterms and impeach and remove this corrupt administration.
That's why the regime is gearing up to cancel the midterms, declare martial law, close the borders (no one can leave or take any money out of the USA), and declare all Democrats criminals. It's coming. You heard it here first. |
