| My DC is taking physics summer school online through FCPS. Is it really true that he will have 6-7 hours of asynchronous work a day? That is what the website says. Oy. |
| How many weeks long? |
| Yes, People constantly ask this about summer classes. It’s 6-7 hours a day. It’s an entire year in like 6 weeks. It has to be that long. |
| and you better make sure the student is self-motivated and has a great internet connection |
| Yes. Summer school is intensive. It is not light work, people say this every single year. You need a very dedicated and motivated student with good time management to do well in a summer course. |
| Hope your kid enjoys learning from videos. Mine could not do it. |
This. These classes are not the same as credit recovery or ESY. Please don't sign your child up for Geometry, Spanish 3, or Physics in the summer unless they're a stellar student with excellent executive functioning skills. |
It's not even 6 weeks this year, it's more like 4 weeks, June 23 - July 25. |
| This surprises me because I have heard other FCPS parents talk about some of the summer classes not being bad (exception is Geometry). I think we will give it a try for the first week - you can drop without grade penalty the first 7 days. |

I wouldn't think Physics is a great course to take over the summer. It's pretty intense and cramming a whole school year into 4-5 weeks seems pretty challenging.
DD just finished a normal full year of Physics and it's a lot. |
If you multiply 6.5 times the number of classes, it gets you back to the hours they normally would have had in school. But that’s still a lot. |
| Omg summer school is 6-7 weeks but more like 4-5 weeks. Like what is it about logic that people don’t get. Will the yearlong course my kid takes in a month instead of nine months be harder. Will they need to do a lot of work. What about their grade will they be able to retake everything. Yes yes no |
no retakes in summer school online. midterms and finals are all in person. your kid misses 2 days: they are withdrawn from the course. you have exactly about 2 days to decide to withdraw with no fee penalty. after 3rd day, no refunds. |
Thanks for updating that it’s still like it was in 2005. That’s how it should be forever. Fully support on my end |
| Assume these posts for everything except PE/Health, which have been told is straight-forward easy. Not sure if midterm or final and thought just show up 1 hour on Zoom and do 1 hour Fitbit exercise and that’s it. The can’t miss more than 2 days the same though. |
