The media does not want to inform people. It wants to make money. It wants people to tune in for the next 90 days.
They don't want people to make up their minds in this clear-cut and deeply annoying contest and then tune out for 3 months. |
Don’t disagree. I had largely tuned out after the infamous debate because I was tired of the unbalanced reporting on Biden. Have been following since Biden bowed out. Now that it’s clear that the problem with Harris is that she laughs and that Walz didn’t use the correct adjective regarding his national guard retirement, I can tune out again. The media has failed abjectly to do its job. Trump himself has become pathetic and his children should really step in and care for him. And Trump supporters are such downers. Who needs it. |

Read literally any political article and notice that Republican sources are used at a ratio of about three Republicans for every Democratic source. |
Except if they did just inform people of where we are, people could make decisions accordingly and the media could move on to informing people about more pressing matters. |
| Trump conflates crowd size and TV ratings with love, so it's absolutely eating him alive that Harris is drawing huge crowds. |
Actual journalism costs money. Hiring reporters, letting them travel and research, risking making the wrong person angry. You know what is low cost? Hiring a dozen pundits and letting them talk about Trump 24/7. And you get good ratings! Remember how when Trump won all these cable outlets and newspapers sent reporters out on field trips to the rest of America to ask people why they liked Trump? And the supposed moral of the story was that coastal media was out of touch and needed to focus more on the rest of America? And then nothing changed for another 8 years. Journalism doesn’t bring in money. When was the last time you saw reporting on anything other than the election on cable news? |

Lawrence O’Donnell is absolutely right. I couldn’t believe MSNBC gave Trump a free hour+ of airtime to campaign and treated this like a real press conference. A few years ago, they wouldn’t carry his remarks live and they’d just say that they’d show viewers anything truly newsworthy, if there was anything. I disagree with only one thing O’Donnell says in this clip. You don’t fact check Trump by putting Kamala’s degrees up on the screen when Trump calls her stupid. You make people consider the source. The screen should say, “Man who once asked if you could stop a hurricane by detonating a nuclear bomb inside it calls Kamala Harris stupid” Or how about, “Candidate whose own former Secretary of State called him an ‘f’ing moron’ calls Kamala Harris stupid.” |
| The problem is, his supporters who watched on Fox News and worse probably think he nailed it. |
I worked at a federal agency as an advisor to a high level Republican appointee (I’m a career non political). He spent most of the day gossiping with reporters over his personal phone and providing them with info on background. Or going to lunch with reporters. Or meeting them for coffee. He spent more time chatting with reporters than with expert staff on the issues our agency handles. This is actually how Washington works. |
No, that is simply how the appointed administrator you worked for works. There are plenty of appointees who take their jobs seriously. It is the difference between a party that generally appoints people with some background and expertise in the agency and topic under which they are serving, and appointees who donated money and this is their payback. Trump plans on simply appointing loyalists as already stated in other threads. |
Why? That hour+ of airtime was the best evidence that Trump is mentally declining rapidly and that he is no longer fit for office. MSNBC is known to lean pretty far left and so their talking heads talking about Trumps' decline and incompetence would only be chalked up to their liberal leaning and would not be nearly as effective. But letting him ramble and show that he is fully in the throes of age-related mental decline will speak to many more voters than the talking heads criticizing him. Trump is his own worst enemy at this point. The campaign knows, just like the Biden campaign knew about Biden's age and decline. The Trump campaign is now trying to do what Biden's campaign did and hide him. Hence why the number of public appearances for Trump have been limited. The difference is that whenever they let Biden out in public, he was rehearsed and scripted and he would largely stick to the script which would hide his decline. Trump on the other hand, refuses to follow teleprompters and scripts, and when they let him out, he will not stick to the script, so he shows just how far he has declined every time he gets out. Trump has peaked. His only hope was to challenge Biden because he will not be able to beat anyone else. Harris is a mediocre candidate at best and she is still likely to win pretty easily because her opponent is Trump. |
