📢 ACTION NEEDED: Protect ES Literacy Enrichment for Advanced Learners!
MCPS is ending the Enriched Literacy Curriculum (ELC) that served gifted 4th and 5th graders in cohorted classes. Instead, schools can now choose between: ➡️ Model 1 – Enriched CKLA curriculum taught in cohorted advanced classes ➡️ Model 2 – Enrichment as an add-on in mixed-ability classes 🚨 Model 1 is the best way to ensure advanced learners get the consistent, enriched instruction they need. Past experience shows that when enrichment is optional or unmonitored, it often doesn’t happen—and MCPS is not requiring training or conducting oversight this time either. 🧠CKLA is a new curriculum aligned to grade-level standards, and teachers are still adjusting. Now is not the time to expect every teacher to layer in enrichment in mixed-ability classrooms—especially when many students haven’t had CKLA in grades K–3. Model 1 makes it easier to implement enrichment well, by training a smaller number of teachers to deliver a fully enriched curriculum to a cohorted group of advanced learners. 🎯 We need YOUR voice. Principals are choosing between these models NOW. Email your principal today and urge them to choose Model 1! 📧 CC central office and Board of Education members so they know this matters to families. ✅ EMAIL YOUR PRINCIPAL AND COPY AND PASTE THIS EMAIL LIST TO THE CC LINE: Thomas_W_Taylor@mcpsmd.org, Niki_T_Hazel@mcpsmd.org, kisha_logan@mcpsmd.org, Melaika_A_Brown@mcpsmd.org, kristie_l_clark@mcpsmd.org, Julie_Yang@mcpsmd.org, Graciela_Rivera-oven@mcpsmd.org, Karla_Silvestre@mcpsmd.org, Rita_M_Montoya@mcpsmd.org, Brenda_Wolff@mcpsmd.org, Laura_M_Stewart@mcpsmd.org, Natalie_Zimmerman@mcpsmd.org, Praneel_S_Suvarna@mcpsmd.org ✉️ Let’s make sure our advanced students don’t lose the enrichment they need to thrive! #GTeducation #MCPS #CKLA #EnrichmentMatters #Model1Now |
There's nothing Council can do. Focus your efforts on MCPS |
Sorry saw CC and thought it was Council. Disregard |
Looks like the MCCPTA gifted committee finally woke up on this. We've been talking about it here for months... |
Congrats on the Chat GPT post... |

Is any school going with Model 1? Knowing MCPS I predict all schools will choose Model 2. |
Or they could offer the CES curriculum at all schools. But I guess they are fine with some segment of students having access to that curriculum while equally able and eligible but non-lottery-winning kids can twist in the wind with Model 1 or 2 over here. |
+1 Exactly what I thought |
I think that is what ELC was. They are moving in the opposite direction. |
Ours is. |
This feels relevant to the other thread on multi level English classes in middle school (going away from honors for all). Does it need to start at the ES level? |
Yet they keep the CES. Why doesn’t everyone who qualifies have access to the same program? Tear it all down. |
Our school is a pilot school for CKLA and uses model 2 and probably still will ![]() |
With CES now being a lottery it seems like everything is watered down. Students who supplement will definitely have an edge. |
