I came across this homeexchange meetups close to me and I am debating checking it out but wondering if people here have recent experience with homeexchange they would like to share? or have you attended this type of homeexchange meetup before? I have been hearing about homeexchange for a couple of years now and want to learn more.

My brother did this once. The people flooded his house and he never did it again. |
oh that suck for your brother! my family has been doing this for 3 years and really love it, we have stayed in some wonderful places locally and around the world. If I remember correctly homeexchange have some kind of insurance policy to cover damage? yeah I would freak out too if something like that was to happen to us, but so far we have had great luck (knock on wood).
OP, to answer your question, if you are considering joining homeexchange, a meetup is a great place to meet people and get some real feedback. I checked their main meetup site and found this one (https://homeexchangeday.com/40e07192-cec6-4d21-b305-9c5e2ea12961) close to Silver Spring which is closer to me and I will try to attend that one (I love Locavino). |
Our family has been using home exchange for more than a decade and we love it. It's not for everyone, though, so going to a meet up might be a good way to see if it's a good fit for you. In fact, I considered hosting a meet up but the date wasn't good for me. But I'm happy to answer questions here if you have any.

I have done it for a few years. You have to be ok with people staying in your house, and staying in other people's real houses, not vacation rentals that are free of personal effects. We have had some great ones, and some not as good. My issue has mostly been cleanliness though - people's homes are not always as clean as I would like, and people not leaving my home as clean as I would like (but this can be remedied by using professional cleaners).
Its not unlike Airbnb really - some are better than others. Our guests have all been fine. I will see that I have never set up a simultaneous exchange - the dates never work that well. So if you are home a lot and only have a few designated vacations it will be very hard to actually made the true home exchange work. |
One can get lucky and have a good experience or get unlucky and have a bad experience. Contracts protect the company organizing the exchange and do not really protect the users. We thought about it and skipped — we did not like the risks or gamble. YMMV. |
PP from 11:33, I can also answer questions! |
OP here, thank you all, I think I will checkout the meetup! |
Creepy. |
I had not heard of this and was fascinated so I checked reddit. Seems like many people who do this successfully are renters themselves so its more like a condo or apartment exchange.
I wouldn't do this if you own/rent a TH or SFH where umpteen things could go wrong. |
